Globally, butterflies and dragonflies are in significant peril, with many species facing threats that could lead to extinction. Butterfly and dragonfly counts allow us to monitor the impact of climate change, habitat loss and pollution on these insects. The Carden Alvar counts were initiated by Bob Bowles in 1998. Today, they are among the oldest continuous counts in Ontario.
Bob Bowles is an award winning writer, artist, photographer and naturalist. He is the founder and coordinator of the Ontario Master Naturalist Certificate program offered at the Orillia campus of Lakehead University. He has conducted biological inventories on behalf of regional conservation associations, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Defence. Join us as he provides a look at insect species at risk based on thirty years of monitoring activity on the Carden Alvar.
